How to Get a Japanese IP Address?

A Japanese IP address is normally only assigned to Internet users who are physically located in Japan. However, if you connect to a Japanese VPN (virtual private network), you can browse with a Japanese IP address from anywhere in the world. You also benefit from the additional advantages of using a VPN server, namely, increased security and anonymity.

But what are the advantages of a Japanese IP address? How do you connect to Shellfire VPN in Japan? And is the whole thing even legal? Let’s take a closer look at these questions.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Japanese IP Address?

Using a reputable VPN provider like Shellfire has a number of benefits in itself, which we’ll discuss in a moment.

But first, let’s see what you gain by browsing with a Japanese IP address—first and foremost, access to otherwise blocked and exclusive content from the Japanese Internet!

Streaming Japanese content

Streaming providers, TV media libraries and other websites check or geo-locate the user’s location via IP address. If a user is not from the country for which the content is intended or even licenses, the site operator blocks the content. This is referred to as geo-blocking. However, if the user has a Japanese IP address, the content can be access without any problems. So you can watch Japanese TV channels like TBS or Nihon TV or stream your favorite anime in the original language.

In other situations, online platforms like Spotify or DAZN are cheaper to subscribe to in Japan. Therefore, a Japanese VPN can theoretically even save you money.

Another point in favor of a Japanese IP address involves the range and scope of the streaming providers’ libraries. Netflix offers different series and movies in different countries.  Netflix Japan’s library is one of the largest in the world with over 6500 movies and series. There’s even content produced exclusively for Japan, such as the series “Terrace House” or “Midnight Diner”.

Thus, a Japanese IP address clearly has a number of advantages when it comes to streaming.

Disguise your location and browse anonymously

Internet providers are able to assign their IP addresses to specific devices. Authorities make use of this for law enforcement purposes. The bigger problem with this, however, is online freedom. Google and other sites can track your activities across different websites via cookies and your IP address. Suddenly an online store is offering you the exact product you just research on Google.

However, with a good VPN provider, this third-party advertising becomes more difficult. You are virtually submerged in a sea of other Internet users and are thus guaranteed anonymity.

This is especially important if you are in a country where there is a lot of censorship and Internet freedom is particularly low. These include, for example, China, Russia and Iran – but also popular vacation destinations such Turkey and Dubai.

Security online

A VPN server can significantly improve security online. One example is poorly encrypted or open Wi-Fi hubs, such as those found in cafés or hotels.

Here, unencrypted Internet traffic can be easily read (man-in-the-middle attack). A good VPN like Shellfire encrypts your data packets and puts them into a “data vault”. So, if someone reads your internet traffic, they can’t do anything with it.

Is It Legal to Simulate a Japanese IP Address?

The short answer is yes. The use of a VPN is not prohibited in Japan. However, some streaming provider such as Netflix prohibit the use of VPNs in their terms and conditions. In practice, however, account blocking is very rare.
